99% of Field Service Leaders Say AI Beats Technician Burnout as Workforce Crisis Deepens: Praxedo Study
A joint survey from Praxedo and Field Service Insights explores how 100 field service leaders are using next-generation technology to combat technician burnout, retain veteran knowledge, and streamline field operations.
CHICAGO, IL – August 19, 2026 — Praxedo, a global leader in field service management software, in partnership with Field Service Insights, today announced the release of a comprehensive research report detailing the operational pressures, talent retention strategies, and AI adoption trends shaping modern field service organizations. Based on a survey of 100 senior leaders across energy, utilities, heavy equipment, and telecommunications, the whitepaper, titled “Managing Field Service Talent in the Age of AI,” explores how service organizations are supporting field crews in an increasingly complex operating environment.
The report highlights a growing workforce crisis driven by an aging talent pool and high job strain. 70% of field service leaders identify the loss of institutional knowledge as senior technicians retire as a major operational risk. At the same time, unpredictable work schedules and administrative burdens continue to drive technician burnout, making recruitment and long-term retention a central priority for service executives.
Field crews and back-office staff face distinct operational hurdles that directly impact daily productivity:
- Field Crew Isolation: For technicians on-site, the single greatest daily hurdle is inadequate access to customer history and work order details (43%), forcing crews to improvise or delay job completions.
- Dispatch Bottlenecks: In the back office, 47% of dispatchers report spending significant time manually readjusting routes and calling customers to handle schedule disruptions.
- Customer Communication Gaps: Portals and self-service tools are struggling to keep up with customer demands, with 77% of leaders reporting that customers still call frequently for routine updates.
To alleviate these pressures, field service organizations are accelerating the deployment of artificial intelligence. 88% of surveyed organizations have adopted AI capabilities to support field crews. Far from replacing workers, these technologies are serving as an essential retention tool: 99% of AI adopters report a positive impact on technician morale and burnout, pointing to improvements in workload balancing, route optimization, and hands-free post-job reporting.
Looking ahead, service leaders are aligning technology budgets directly with workforce support. Over the next 12 months, 40% of organizations plan to prioritize mobile app usability for field staff, while 33% are focusing on AI-assisted diagnostic tools to help junior technicians troubleshoot complex tasks independently and boost first-time fix rates.
“Managing field service talent today requires removing the daily friction that leads to frustration and burnout. When field crews lack critical job context or back-office teams are forced to manually juggle routes all day, morale suffers. This report shows that forward-thinking leaders are using AI not as a gimmick, but as a practical support system that preserves institutional knowledge, balances workloads, and empowers technicians in the field.”
